The bedrock of the talking therapies that are offered in Engage is confidentiality, honesty and empathy. With that in mind, we provide a stable, safe and consistent environment for the pupils that can allow them to feel heard. Relationships are built over time and mutual respect and autonomy is key to the healthy working alliance that we aim to develop. By building this relationship and seeing some of the pupils over different periods of time, trust is developed. Those that access the counselling, learn to use the space to explore elements of their school or home life that they may be finding challenging. We aim to model a relationship where each party is respected and their choices considered. Advice giving is not part of the package but an exploration of choice is used for autonomy and responsibility to be developed. Offering a “good experience” of counselling can hopefully provide a tool in later life that may prove useful.
